would be intense learning an 8 string guitar eh.
as long as the guitarist uses/needs the full range, good hard i reckon

i find it really interesting that Animals as Leaders doesnt have a bassist at all
Just dual 8 string guitarists, with one of them tuned a whole octave(?) down
Pretty badass

Depends how you use it. If you just transpose everything done a string (or two) then there's no point. I thought Ihsahn used 8 strings well on his latest album, but I can see the potential for there to be a fuck load of idiots who can't use one for shit and just play it like a normal 6 string...

AAL has a bassist when playing live.

8 string guitars are interesting. After The Burial use them really, really well.

Personally I wouldnt want one. I play in drop tuning, anything in standard tuning confuses the hell out of me, haha. I had contemplated a 7 string tuned to drop A but it seems a bit silly. I could do exactly the same with a 6 string anyway.

Yeah you can accomplish the same low end on a 6 string, but you lose out on the high end range in doing that. I'm a lead fan, I can't wait to try some 8 string arpeggio's! Ridiculous, but why not. haha.

They're extended range guitars - I assumed it's naturally better since you have more note choices???. I like how Rusty Cooley strings his 8-string with a High-A-String as opposed to an Low F#-string(?).

Tobin Abasi (Aninals As Leaders ) and Ihsahn (solo) have definitely proved the effectiveness of 8-string guitars in using the WHOLE range of the guitar as opposed to people simply chugging away on the low strings and not utilizing the upper register of the neck.

There's a guitar brand called Aguile who make a 9-string guitar if anyone cares:

"Guitar is setup to tune as a bass on the lower 2 strings (E, A). Then with standard 7 string guitar turning on the upper 6 strings (B, E, A, D, G, B, E). However a variety of tunings is possible. "

Pretty interesting concept on that one

Forgot to mention that 8-string guitars used in a jazz context (with walking bass-lines, harmony and melody lines ALL being played at once) is fucking awesome!!!

I got the Ibanez RGa8.

Its the next one down from the RG2228. A little more affordable but still sounds great! Its so much fun. I only got it for the novelty of having a guitar with that much range. Now its by far my favorite instrument to play on.

I love to play ambient stuff on it so i don't need a bassist to keep up the bottom end but as soon as you flick your distortion on it turns into a real monster. chug chuggity chug chug.

I'd love to know if anyone else in welly has an 8 string? Would be worth while having a jam I reckon.

^^ No they dont, Tosin said in a interview they havent played live with a bassist as they havent felt the need to, havent seen any videos with a bassist either,

BTW Tosin actually recorded that album on a 7 string :) using a line 6 POD not his Axe Fx to my dismise :?

jesse you should have a goood jam on a 7 first, going from a 6 to a 7 for me was comfortable cause of my big hands  but took a bit of work with my picking hand getting use to the extra string,

should get a few 8's for the studio aye ;)

Tuning on 8s can be pretty choice also, i know chris from scale the summit uses 8's with his high E tuned to G and the other strings tuned to a standard 7 string

i agree^^

My first extended range was a Jackson js7. At first when i saw it i was totally confused. all my guitar theory went out the window. having one extra string for me made it look like a completely different instrument.

But it didn't take too long to get the hang of it.

The same thing happened with that 8.

My friend Mark (lives in Wellies) has a project called "Chamber Of Din" that's got him and a mate playing 8-string guitars with backing drum tracks (currently). You might get to see them play live at some point this year as they're about to have a full band lineup.

I dont see too many issues with going straight to an 8. Sure it will take a while to suss out extending scales that i already know out but really can already imagine what id do. I mean fuck I went from a NO STRING to a 6. So that's still a bigger jump than adding on two.

Once the shapes and sounds of a scale are embedded in your mind it shouldn't really matter how many strings there are you should be able to find your way around.

But I'm the kinda guy that when I play computer games chucks it straight on hardest. Even if that means dying 1000 times in a row until i start to get it. I'll get it. I'm not good with in betweens.

It will still ultimately be quicker to get comfortable on an 8 string by going straight to one rather than waiting around on a 7 first.

And if you don't agree... guts bro.

I definitely wouldnt fuck around with a 7 first. I would go straight to the 8. Extending the scales to the next strings is simple as fuck. One day when I have the money I will upgrade.
