Best gigs of 2011

Postby Dead Kid » Wed Jan 04, 2012 9:08 am

Might as well ask the same questions as last time. What were the best gigs in NZ in 2011? Or seen any good gigs overseas?

In approx. descending order of greatness, I liked:

Gang of Four @ Powerstation 24/2
ZZ Top @ Seddon Park 16/4
Melvins/High on Fire @ Kings Arms 19/2
Kyuss @ Powerstation 14/5
Witchrist/Open Tomb/Fuck Life etc. @ Thirsty Dog 9/7
Fetus Productions @ Kings Arms 25/11
Stonerfest @ Wine Cellar/Whammy 3/12
Beastwars @ Thirsty Dog 28/5
Kylesa @ Whammy Bar 23/2

2011 was actually a pretty slow year for me gig-attendance-wise, but the Wellington Kyuss show was a definite highlight as one of my all time favourite shows. So was Russian Circles, amazing!

1. Kyuss/Beast Wars
2. Russian Circles
3. ... ... I don't know
4. Big day out?? maybe? hmm, well the acid was good and I liked the atmosphere, was my first BDO.
5. ... working hard on my own music, playing drums, getting way better - that's good and time well spent, it is
6. Watching movies, watched heaps of movies in 2011
7. 2012 might be a pretty slow year for me gig attendance wise too, I'm back to being a student
8. 2013 should be good though, I'll be the finance king and fit for attendance
9. Put in the hard yards now for a better future.

I'm pretty sure I didn't go to a single show.

The one show I planned on going to was cancelled due to the February earthquake (Amanda Palmer at Al's Bar.)

For a Metal forum you guys don't seem to be doing much in terms of supporting and attending Metal shows...

I seem to be going to about 1 metal gig every two months lately. Which admittedly is less than normal. Due to a number of factors. Mainly the state of the bands, I only tend to go to shows when I really think the bands are gonna give me a rush.

From strictly a Wellington point of view: I used to (back in the valve days) go to lots of shows whether I was really into the bands or not, because back in the day the atmosphere kicked ass really - these days, unless I really love the bands I usually have a boring night out and feel like I've wasted $50 - $100 on booze and entry. And there aren't really many bands to be excited about.

I've heard good things about the recent shows you run Skoll, it sounds like your doing a good job of putting together a professional show getting good bands and putting together decent promotional campaigns, if I were more into death/black metal that would be a treat for me and well worth going to. But there have been a few others I should have gone to but haven't.

Plus I have a new-ish girlfriend who's not that into metal (but does enjoy stand out metal shows if they aren't too deathy), so I will only take her out to a gig if I know (or think) the show will be fucking awesome, and sadly because of a combination of a lack of exciting bands, and a lack of atmosphere, that doesn't seem to be very often.

I used to love going to Valve every weekend, even to just stand outside drinking/chatting/laughing for the whole night, I don't know what changed but it hasn't been the same in ages, and now it's usually just boring and depressing, fuck all people there, zero good times to be had. Maybe some kind of Valve 2004-ish reunion/revival gig would bring back the spirit, at least for a night.

But then again, maybe I'm just out of the loop, I'm currently prioritising working on my own music and getting my life organized, I really don't have much spare time or money left over.

Local bands I want to see (see more of): Mindfuck, The Dauntless, Depths, Of Blackest Oceans, Elephant of the Ocean, Razorwyre, Heresiarch, Decortica, Dracoaerius, Beastwars.

I got it from the impression most people here give off. There's been a lot of events that people across the country promoter have put a lot of effort into which I'm sure a lot of you also missed as well as a majority of the "scene".

Still seems to be the same problem of people wanting to post \m/ online or complaining about how no one appreciates Metal in the public while doing nothing to help the cause itself.

I'm not trolling.

Very true.

Cheers. I have a few bands lined up from the US for this year as well as some more events and fests, whether any happen down here depends really on if it's economically feasible when considering the turnouts for Wellington of late.

I remember those days and agree on most levels with what you say. I think the general apathy from "the scene" doesn't help either. People prefer to think back to the old days and complain online rather than do something about it and I think the thing is that we were all younger and more enthusiastic back then rather than the music being particularly good...

I have gone to quite alot this year but not so much in the last half really.
The 2 beastwars gigs at Bodega and Mighty mighty were huge.
Kyuss at Vic Uni,Melvins at Bar bodega
Soundwave in Melbourne was mean as!
Capital punishment in wellington had a good mix of killer bands and good vibe about it.
Playing with Human in november was a good night out as was playing in wanganui at the end of the year.
Most local shows i go to these days are a whole lot of different people I don't even know.Is getting hard to get people out to gigs these days.

I'm on the same boat for these bands

Impossibruuuu

And yeah those gigs you've been involved with looked pretty pro/well planned
Just really into those bands that much,
but then again, nothing beats the live experience, good or bad

1) Earthquakes shut down gigs here for quite a while.
2) There honestly hasn't been much on that I'm interested in - and if there is, I've seen them over and over. There's not much happening locally that spins my wheels at the moment.

Plus I'm a grumpy old cunt who these days would rather listen to a album or demo than endure the inevitable ear-raping that is bar music. I did that for nearly 20 years (gigging and going to gigs) and it doesn't do it for me any more.

Oh man I haven't had that feeling in ages. I miss that.

Yeah I feel the same way about old venues here, none of which are standing any more.

I have fond memories of my one gig at The valve. Played a mint gig. All the bands were rockin'. Kick-ass post-gig shennannagins. A ripping hangover and a missed flight the next day! Rock 'n roll.
