Blacktooth would have to my favourite NZ band, and they are good as humble bastards. Playing with them this weekend in hamilton at ward lane.

Heres the "About us" from their myspace

"BLACKTOOTH, formed in 2005 by Guitarist Ollie, Vocalist Dan and bass player Matt has been a well recieved band in New Zealand with its several styles of metal influences. While writing their 1st attempt at a predominantly 'Heavy metal/powergroove style album, entitled 'Unholy Reign', drummer Kane joined the band and with his Hardcore/Thrash background the music began to take a more thrash metal direction.

With the 'Unholy Reign' album written and recorded Blacktooth undertook in playin several shows spanning the North island and meeting the other bands they still share stages with. Some of these being Metal Tower, Slave Cadaver, Dawn of Azazel,Every man for Himself and Bloodletting. Eventually with the band name and beerguts growing Blacktooth later went onto play shows with 8 Foot Sativa, Ulcerate, Sinate, Tainted, Odiusembowel and as of late Florida death metal pioneers Cannibal Corpse, Australian heavyweights Psycroptic, The Berzerker, State of Integrity and Daysend.

With Blacktooth constantly writing new material the band was able to record the E.P. 'Feeding my Minds Destruction' as a taste of things to come with the second album titled 'Desensitize'. The 'Feeding' E.P. saw the band solidifying their thrash metal sound while also delving into the Black and Death metal genres.

As of late the band has completed recording of the 'Desensitize' album and are looking forward to its release and tour (due June 2008) In january 2009 drummer Kane left the band to continue with his career in Christchurch. July 2009 Stevil joined Blacktooth and has added a more Death metal element to the team. Blacktooth now plans to continue their Thrash/Death/Black metal evolution and write more faster, heavier and experimental songs. They will be playing an excess of shows throughout the year and hope to see you there...... Get off the couch!"

Its from their myspace, so I'm guessing they wrote it themselves. Theres definitely alot of thrash aspects in their music.

Wait.... maybe he's right, if you really think about it... what gives them the right to imply they have taken a 'thrash' direction with their music? They need to think carefully before throwing around descriptions like 'thrash' and 'death' and 'black' and 'heavy metal' and 'music' and 'band'. They should've just said they own some musical instruments and have compiled arrangements of notes, beats and lyrics.

I don't hear much Thrash at all... Or Black Metal...

It'd be like me saying my band is Symphonic Progressive Power Metal.

Pretty hard to really define anything these days tho, everything is crossing over to something else. Its open to interpretation really, unless you're strickly sticking to an old well established genre template.
Fans almost always label their favorite bands with genres they dont want/agree with anyway.

exactly. I dont listen to music expecting a certain aspect to be there. I listen with out bias, for music does not have rules. just guide lines to follow as taught to us hundreds of years ago by the great composers like Mozart and Bach!

Well congratulations on transcending music labels and bias. All I'm saying is bands who say they're something they're not are annoying as fuck. I'm not the one who put those genres in the description though am I?

So is Skoll using the samples on Blacktooth myspace page or the Wellington show a couple of weeks ago that he says he went to as reference? I've been listening to all kinds of metal for 20years and i hear a bit of all those 'sub genres' in there new live capacity.
