I don't know what sound was freakier - that rumble or the sound of all my stuff hitting the ground downstairs.

Not a single thing broken though! *phew*

That photo was taken very close to my house. The shaking and rumbling and breaking glass was a novel and unpleasant way to wake up. I'm all for rock n roll but don't really wish to repeat the experience.

Not sure - it's a modern building so hopefully it's all good. Would hate for Metallica to cancel!

Probably just holes where buildings once were. You can go thru some suburbs and see almost no visible damage. Other suburbs are just fucked up.

Most people I know are just going to have to replace some appliances, but I'm hearing of friends of friends who have lost everything. Houses, vehicles, contents, businesses.

Yeah we've been getting plenty of media coverage of the plane crash too.

Fuck, what a way to go.

I saw the news said it was a bit stronger than the Haiti quake. Just goes to show what a difference modern building codes make. My uncle's fairly new house is fine thankfully.

My sister is disappointed she missed the excitement. She lived in Hornby but moved overseas in '08. I wonder what her flat looks like though...

Yep our building standards helped a lot. Plus we're not as densely populated as Haiti. The timing had a lot to do with it also - if it happened during business hours there'd most definitely had been fatalities.

Most of my immediate friends & family got off very lightly. I was just looking at pics of a co-worker's house. Looks fine from the exterior - but inside everything is just warped and munted, just torn apart at the seams - silt all through the house, and a swimming pool that is now 1.5 metres out of the ground (where it was once level). She came to work in the clothes she was wearing on Saturday.

A few people saw flashes of lightning during the quake, and my mate saw some out west the night before the quake.

more fuel to my fire.

think about it. the earthquake commision just got 16bil, theres lots of buisness men that secretly welcomed the right to claim. and speaking of claim

have u noticed that there are RIGHTS to the broadcasting of the CHCH earthquake.
owned by TVNZ and NZHERALD. every other video or "user" uploaded vid to youtube was removed.

claims have been made that "exclusive" coverage can only come from "the news"
if thats not sus i dont know what is.

not sure if there still removing chch earthquake vids off youtube. but yesty and day before i got reports they were.
