I'd been looking forward to Made in China's debut full length for ages, and it's a goodun. They have a few followers up this way but I dunno how the album release shows went. I couldn't make any of them and got the CD by mail instead.
Ritual is a great opener. The first 3 songs have some doomy elements to them. There's a 90s grunge/hard rock sound all the way through the album, but also enough variety to keep things interesting. Plenty of mesmerising riffs and perhaps a bit of a bluesy side as well. I reckon a bit more Soulseller has rubbed off on these guys, and in the absence of their hairy brothers they'll be keeping the Dunedin beard sound going.
There's new versions of Crash and Heavy Low, each of which is jammed out for an extra 3 minutes. For a break from the 90s sound, the start of Crash sounds eerily similar to an epic Budgie song, only it goes on to be even longer. It was a highlight the first time I saw them live, because you just know it's eventually going to build up to be as heavy as any of their other songs, even if it takes most of the song to do it. I'll have to give the album more listens to form a stronger opinion on the rest of the songs.
