Recording software for PC (problems)

Postby Obzen » Mon May 03, 2010 1:45 pm

I'm currently using Adobe Audition.
Just doing simple recordings using a room mic.
I'm having problems with it cutting out. It seems to happen when everything goes loud (e.g. when the screaming starts, or when theres an extra heavy/loud bit).

I'm not sure whether its a problem with the mic, the software or the computer.
But is there any other PC recording software anyone can recommend?

obviously you've made sure your levels are sweet so that it isnt clipping (red lining)?

When you say "cutting out" do you mean the program crashes or the sound just stops being made? If its the former then its probably to do with your computer's resources; might be pushing it too hard if it's a crap computer. If it's the latter then do what death said and check the level of the input, make sure its not clipping.

I've made sure the volumes arent clipping, they are pretty low so there isnt really a chance of clipping.

The computer/program isnt crashing, the problem usually starts by cutting chunks out of the recording (leaving blank spaces) then continues on fine for a few seconds then stops recording completely but the cursor keeps moving forward (as if its playing) while the track that is meant to be recording has come to an end and is no longer growing.

I've tested it by just recording a cd playing through a stereo and it records fine without any hiccups. It only seems to happen when theres full on noise happening (especially screams).

Or, Reaper is a good program worth trying.

Hmm, had a look at those forums... seems like some promising solutions/ideas, but I cant see myself finding the time to try them all out any time soon. I wish I had a Mac, at least they just work.

recording in fruityloops??
I used to use it all the time to create synth drum tracks, but can you actually record?
I'm beginning to think its a problem with the microphone not being able to handing certain frequencies and the volume of a full on metal band jam.

That should be easy enough to figure out. Try recording in any old free program, eg. Audacity.

Try the mic with a different computer. It might be a problem with the sound card.

Could likely be an issue with your soundcard not being fully compatible with Audition. Clicks/pops and audio cutout are common with compatibility issues or syncronising issues.

i know what it is.. or at least i think i do..
the disk play back buffer rate is too low. or the input samples is to low.

we had this recently recording guitars @ 48 then resampling them to 44 and the processor on my computer i had the settings on super low. but because it came from a higher source. clipping and clicking artifacts appear.

on protools its the DAE settings and h/w buffers size. and of course. Cache size.

also. you need to use seperate bus's for max performance.

so firewire bus or usb bus. thru cpu then fsb then external usb disk (even though thats 2x on usb)
